The United Nations officially marks World Cotton Day on October 7 this year. Cotton, a simple plant and fiber, is increasingly being recognized for its role in sustainable and inclusive economic development, as well as its many secondary uses, not only in bringing fabric to the world, but also in providing jobs for millions of people around the globe.

Cotton is natural woven or knitted into all kinds of fabrics, such as velvet, corduroy, knitted fabric, and flannel, however, the United Nations define the world cotton, is not only focus on the role of cotton in the fashion and home products, but to improve the recognition of the cotton market, raise awareness of its role in the international trade and poverty alleviation. The organization notes that cotton is a drought-tolerant crop that is resistant to climate change, meaning it can be grown in dry and arid areas.

"Cotton accounts for only 2.1 percent of the world's arable land, but it meets 27 percent of the world's textile needs," the UN said. There is almost no waste in the whole cotton plant." Cotton is not just a fiber source, its seeds are used as high-quality feed for cows. Seeds can also be pressed into cottonseed oil, which is used in cooking, cosmetics, soap and foods such as potato chips and salad dressings. Short fleece, the lint left over from the cotton ginning process, also has myriad industrial uses. Short fleeces with longer fibers are commonly used in medical supplies, while short fleeces with shorter fibers are used in items such as gunpowder, cotton balls and even X-ray film. Cotton byproducts are everywhere, from ice cream to wallpaper, hot dog casings to baseballs, not to mention the many things we use around the house, like cotton swabs, wipes and even disposable diapers.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has been working with developing countries to increase productivity and create more jobs through initiatives such as the + Cotton Project, a partnership with a Brazilian company that aims to help Latin American cotton producers introduce innovative farming methods. + The Cotton project promotes sustainable and inclusive production and encourages rural development. The idea is that the government, extension workers, researchers, academics, farmers' unions and the textile sector work together to promote cotton production, drive technological innovation and expand marketing of fibres and their products. The ultimate goals include promoting food security, eradicating rural poverty and hunger, promoting gender equality and autonomy for women farmers, economic growth, and responsible production and consumption.

The US plays an important role in the global cotton market because it is the world's third largest producer and a leading exporter. In recent years, the United States has accounted for about 35 percent of global cotton exports. The U.S. Department of Agriculture reported that during the marketing year August 2019 to July 2020, the country's farmers produced nearly 20 million bales of cotton with a total value of about $7 billion. One pack of cotton -- about 480 pounds of lint -- can produce more than 200 jeans or 1,200 T-shirts. Among them upland cotton output accounts for the vast majority.

In addition to clothing, upland cotton is also used in household items such as curtains, bedding and indoor soft wear, hospital and medical supplies, feminine hygiene products and cleaning wipes.

Upland cotton can also be used in natural, unbleached cotton products. Cotton fibers are mechanically cleaned without the use of water, chemicals or heat. It has high water absorption and low surfactant content. Consumers prefer soft, comfortable and hypoallergenic cotton products. For example, natural, unbleached cotton can be an affordable alternative to a wide range of wipes. Consumers have shown a high regard for cotton as a whole, believing that wipes made from cotton are better than wet cloths made from synthetic fibers. This has become one of the driving factors for consumers to buy cotton products. In particular, they noted the sustainability of Cotton, according to the Cotton Incorporated2022 Global Wipes Survey, most consumers believe that cotton incorporatedwould have a better performance because it is made of natural materials (54%), environmentally friendly (53%), and compostable or biodegradable (49%).

This preference for cotton also shows up in feminine and baby products. According to the Cotton Incorporated 2018 Global Baby Care Survey, the majority of consumers (66%) again said they prefer cotton baby diapers and wipes. Most consumers (71 percent) are "very interested" in diapers containing cotton, and 68 percent are "very fond" of wipes containing cotton. Furthermore, according to the Cotton Incorporated2020 Global Feminine Hygiene Products Survey, most consumers believe that cotton is the best feminine hygiene product fiber for them because it is "the safest for my body" (61%), "non-toxic" (60%), and "hypoallergenic" (60%).

Of course, Cotton is used in almost every clothing category, according to data from the 2022 Cotton Incorporated Lifestyle Survey. Clothing has long been a holiday gift of choice, with about half of holiday gift buyers planning to give it as a gift. And most clothing gift givers will be looking for cotton rich clothing gifts this season.
